Documentation

Practical notes for dedicated servers in Greifswald. Panel, IPMI, and you still run the OS.

First boot

Order a machine, panel login, OS image, and the first SSH session.

After we confirm your order you land in the BareSet panel. Open the new machine. Confirm the OS image (Ubuntu 24.04 is the default) and the public IPv4 on Overview.

If you uploaded an SSH key, that key is in root's authorized_keys. If you did not, the panel shows a one-time password. Copy it now. Change it after the first login.

Watch the console on the IPMI tab until the image finishes writing. Then SSH as root to the address on Overview. The console is the source of truth.

Overview

Live usage, addresses, paid-through date, Renew, and Auto-renew.

Overview is the status page. Renewal sits at the top: paid-through date, Renew, and Auto-renew. Memory, CPU, and disk meters update while the machine is powered on.

Copy the SSH address from Overview or Settings. Extra IPv4 is an add-on. PTR records can be set from Settings once the address is assigned.

IPMI and remote console

Power, ISO mount, and a KVM session when SSH is down.

IPMI is the out-of-band path. It does not depend on the OS being up. From the panel you can power on, power off, reset, and open a remote console.

Treat IPMI credentials like root. The panel proxies the console so you do not have to expose the management address yourself.

SSH and root

Root is the default. Keys beat passwords.

Every image ships with SSH on port 22 and root login with the key you uploaded. If you prefer a sudo user, create one and lock root after.

Password SSH is off on Ubuntu and Debian images. Windows Server uses RDP. Custom ISOs are whatever you installed.

Disks and filesystems

NVMe you can partition how you like.

The first NVMe is imaged with a single root filesystem on the Linux images. Extra disks show up unformatted. Partition and mount them yourself.

Do not wipe the disk that holds the running root unless you have a rescue plan. Use Rescue or an IPMI ISO if you need to rebuild the boot volume.

Network and IPs

One IPv4 on the machine. Extra addresses are an add-on.

The primary IPv4 is on the first NIC. IPv6 is assigned where the hall has it. Do not change the MAC unless you know the port will still learn the address.

A second IPv4 is an add-on. We route it to the same NIC. Reverse DNS is on Settings.

Reinstall OS

Fresh image. Disk wipe. Confirm the name.

Reinstall writes a new image to the boot disk. It destroys the root filesystem. Download a backup first. Type the machine name to confirm.

After reinstall, wait for the image to finish, then use the new key or password from the panel. IPMI stays up so you can watch the installer.

Rescue mode

A small live image when the installed OS will not boot.

Rescue boots a maintenance image over the network. Your disks are attached but not the running root. Mount them read-only if you are unsure.

Leave Rescue when you are done so the machine boots the installed OS again.

Backups

Create, download, restore, and delete snapshots.

The Backups tab lists disk snapshots for this machine. Create a named snapshot before a risky kernel or filesystem change. Restore overwrites the live disk.

Keep your own off-site copy of anything you cannot recreate. After you remove a machine, files stay only for a short download window. See Privacy.

OS images

Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky, Windows Server, or a custom ISO.

You pick the image when we hand over the box, or change it later with Reinstall. Changing the image wipes the boot disk.

Windows Server is a licensed add-on. Custom ISO is for rescue media or an installer you already trust.

Billing and renew

Prepaid cycles, Renew, Auto-renew.

BareSet checkout is prepaid for the cycle you pick. That first payment does not start a subscription unless you turn Auto-renew on.

Renew on Overview opens another cycle of the same machine. Turn Auto-renew off to stop the next charge. You keep the machine until the paid period ends.

Settings

Rename, addresses, billing, reinstall, and remove.

Settings holds the display name, the SSH address, PTR, and a second copy of billing. Reinstall can wipe the disk. Remove this server stops the machine and takes it off your panel.

Type the machine name to confirm destructive actions. The 14-day money-back path is on the Refund page.

How to cancel

How to remove a machine.

Turn Auto-renew off so you are not billed for a later cycle. The machine stays up until the paid-through date. Download backups first.

To delete the machine now: Settings, Remove this server, type the name. For a refund inside 14 days, open Support.

DDoS basics

Filtering is an add-on for network floods.

Ask us if you need filtering in front of a Greifswald machine. Game networks and public services are a common reason.

Application abuse is a different problem from a network flood. Close unused ports. If the server is unreachable and Status still shows the hall up, open a ticket with the time (UTC) and whether IPMI still responds.

Custom hardware

Listed servers and custom builds.

The servers page shows the stock we have in the hall right now. If you need a different CPU, more RAM, or extra NVMe, write to Support with a short spec.

We can order or assemble a machine to that spec.

What support covers

We run the hall and the panel. You run the OS.

We help with panel login, power, IPMI, images, snapshots, the uplink, disk hardware, and a machine that will not boot. Billing and the 14-day money-back path go through Support as well.

Application setup, database tuning, and custom kernels stay on your side. Include the machine ID, what you changed last, and a console capture. That cuts a day off the back-and-forth.
